How God Transformed a Priest’s Doubt: A True Story

By Priest David Proskuryakov

December 16, 2025, but what happens when weariness dims even the joy of Pascha?

When discouragement clouds the heart, the Lord sometimes answers not with rebuke, but with a miracle.

In this moving account, a young priest, worn down by the rigors of monastic life, witnesses a quiet but undeniable act of divine mercy—one that not only sanctified water, but renewed his priestly zeal. A testimony to how God meets us precisely where we falter.

An Ordinary Miracle: When Holy Water Became a Spring of Renewal

This story took place during my brother’s student years. At the time, he was a parishioner at a Moscow monastery and witnessed the event firsthand.

A young priest, recently ordained, had just been assigned to the monastery. As many clergy know, monastic service can be especially demanding, and for someone new to the priesthood, it can prove a daunting trial. Between the long liturgies and the heavy obedience’s, the young man began to experience what we now call burnout.

It was evident to those around him that he was worn down. He had become irritable and despondent. One day, it was his turn to bless the water. In that monastery, large volumes of holy water were needed, so it was usually consecrated outdoors in a sizeable tank—often holding a cubic meter or more.

The priest turned on the tap to fill the reservoir and stepped away to tend to other matters. When he returned, he was greeted by a disheartening sight: the tank was filled to the brim with foul, swampy water. It looked like heavily steeped tea and gave off a pungent odor of rust.

Naturally, such water was unfit for blessing. But burdened by spiritual exhaustion and convinced he would be reprimanded no matter what, the priest waved his hand dismissively—”They’ll scold me anyway”—and began to serve the Moleben.

After the prayers, the faithful began to fill their containers with the newly blessed water. The priest braced for complaints, expecting the crowd to revolt. But to his astonishment, no one seemed troubled. People quietly filled their bottles, without a word of protest or disgust.

Perplexed, the priest approached the tank—and what he saw left him speechless. The murky, foul-smelling sludge had been transformed into crystal-clear spring water. The odor had vanished. By sight and even by taste, it was like the pristine waters of Lake Baikal.

Overwhelmed by this miracle, the priest was transfigured. Scooping up the holy water with a ladle, he ran through the monastery grounds like a child, offering it to anyone he met: “Taste and see how sweet it is!” Many did not understand his exuberance and instinctively kept their distance.

But the priest, now a witness to the Lord’s mercy—shown for his sake alone—leapt for joy like the Prophet and King David, proclaiming to all: “Christ is Risen, for He is Almighty!”

This event changed him forever. It would be an understatement to say that he was merely uplifted—his spiritual heaviness vanished as though it had never existed. The Lord had sanctified the water with His grace, and in doing so, had healed a heart weighed down by affliction.
