Mother Siluana Vlad: When We Hit Rock Bottom

Usually, when we experience something unpleasant, we want to get out of that situation and cry out to God to save us. But God didn’t come to earth to save us from trials. We should say this: “Lord, this trial is a place of meeting with You. When You said: ‘In this world, you will have tribulations,’ You thought about the tribulation I have now. And You said that You have overcome the world. Then, this is an occasion for me to experience the victory You had. Do something with me. Help me meet You and feel You in this trial!”

A trial is usually an event that draws me closer to my heart, that softens my heart. When people have no trials, they live negligently, they don’t even know what they did. When they are troubled, they are more attentive. Therefore, placing our troubles in front of God and calling to God will change us significantly. We should make room for God in any problem we have. The most suitable situations for doing this are those in which we cannot do anything anymore. People who work with addicts say: “My patient has hit rock bottom.”

We often get into hopeless situations in our lives or during a single day. At that moment, we should say: “Lord, take the wheel now because I can’t do it anymore; I don’t know where to go anymore!” And you will see how nicely God gets us out of the mess we had put Him in…With one condition: we need to leave everything aside and say, “You do this!” Unfortunately, it is difficult for us to do this because we always have something to say, we are always right, we always have excuses. This tendency to make things right for ourselves destroys our joy and catapults us into countless severe troubles. If only we understood this and renounced “our rights”!
